Hold your nose

It just occurred to me: In the past year, among my Wiccan friends, a couple moved to North Carolina, another friend moved to South Carolina, another is moving to Texas. Among my gaming friends, one has moved to Philadelphia. Another is moving to Seattle. A couple are moving to Minnesota. It's my deodorant, isn't it?

“The Last Jedi” – my experience

This is not a review. There will be no spoilers. I had not intended to see The Last Jedi on its opening day. I anticipated the theaters would be jammed. Also, there were was a lot scheduled at work both today (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday), including a #ScienceOnHudson talk and the lab's holiday party. Just as I…

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

I've written video-game reviews from time to time, but this is the first one for which I'm giving a trigger warning: discussion of severe mental health issues. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is an unusual video game in that the lead character is psychotic. I'm not using the term in its popular (and incorrect) sense of meaning "psychopath." Senua…

Gender-preference vocabulary

What do you call it when someone wants to be bisexual, but despite that wish they discover they're only attracted to one gender but not the other? I have yet to see a word for this, so I hereby propose one: "wannabi." Someone please notify the OED.

Sense8

This is one of those "Oh! I just watched this incredible thing and I gotta tell you about it!" posts. If you're feeling a bit media-saturated and would rather just wait until the female Doctor is unveiled in the next Christmas special, I'll understand if you want to skip this post. So: Sense8 is the series that…

Eclipse trip – 2017

On the day I'm writing this, it's the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. North America is experiencing three hurricanes in a row. There are many who are dealing with events far more worthy of attention than my eclipse trip. However, I promised myself that I would write the story of my trip to see the total eclipse…

Eclipse report – 21-Aug-2017

Watching this total eclipse was better than losing my virginity. (My apologies to the lady in question, but this is a technical post and I feel I must be completely accurate. Besides, at 2m 11s, the total eclipse lasted longer.) I traveled to Greenville SC to see the eclipse. (There will be a separate blog post about…

A choice of steel

A few years ago, I wrote a blog post on removing plastic jewelry from my Kickin' Wiccan shop on Shapeways. My thoughts on plastic back then were: Photos of plastic jewelry can look cheap. It was not worth customizing jewelry (such as rings) in plastic because I wouldn't make enough money for the time I spent adjusting…

Economix

When I discuss the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) with folks, I usually point them to the following three on-line comics: Obamacare Obamacare Follow-up Trumpcare These three comics go over the details of health insurance in the US, the problems that Obamacare was supposed to solve, how well it solved them, where there was room for improvement, and…

Westworld

This past weekend I turned on my HBO subscription in order to watch Game of Thrones. It gave me the opportunity to binge-watch another HBO series, Westworld. I have mixed feelings about the series. As I'd heard, the show has a narrative complexity and messes around with the viewers' perceptions in an intriguing way. This sustained the…
