Last night’s game – Roll Player

On Friday nights I game with my friends J, A, and M. They’re a group of people who are kind enough to do a COVID test before we meet up.

You know the quality of your friends if they’re willing to stick a cotton swab up their noses for you!

When I was still on FB, I’d post photos of “last night’s game” with a few brief comments. Since I’m not a FB anymore, I’ll post those pictures on my blog instead.

Assuming this becomes another series on my blog: These aren’t intended to be reviews, just a document of the games I’ve played.

Last night’s game was Roll Player.

This is a dice-placement game. The goal is to roll up your character for a D&D-style game.

This was my playmat near the end of the game. As you can tell from the text, as a result of random picks I had to fulfill the role of an Eccentric Elf Bard with a Street Urchin background.

During the game, you select dice from the central playmat, as shown above. In addition to gaining dice to build your character, you can also purchase cards: Skills add abilities that you can use during the game, while Traits affect end-game scoring.

As is usual with our group, we made some mistakes while playing. One I didn’t notice until I was putting this post together: On my player mat, you can see that my one of my Bard’s goals was to have a 17 DEX. I achieved it… NOT! I forgot the little “+2” next to DEX on my Elf character board.

It didn’t make much difference anyway, as M won handily.

I enjoyed Roll Player. The rules aren’t complex, but the strategy can get deep; towards the end we were all absorbed in AP. Also, I enjoy the visceral feel of rolling big handfuls of dice.

We liked the game so much that we plan to play it next Friday, with the expansions.
