Just a few days later, I surpass the unexpected!
C’mon, Mattis! You saw the post title. I rolled a 57 Ability check in Baldur’s Gate 3!
Again, the game didn’t give me the image of the die with the number displayed.
I didn’t think I’d get this far!
Can’t I get some more enthusiasm? How about another “Yay!” from Karlach?
All right, all kidding aside, I understand diminishing returns. After two posts about high rolls, I don’t expect folks to be as into the subject as I am.
But it’s a topic that interests me, so I must keeping writing about it.
Just a note or two to add to those I had for my rolls of 46 and 51:
- This time I rolled a 12 on the Bardic Inspiration.
- I rolled a 4 on Guidance, but just a 2 on Shapeshifter’s Boon.
… which means there’s still room to go higher.
Since I made that roll, I’ve improved Astarion’s Dexterity to 22, and learned how to get it to 24. If I find many more locks for Astarion to pick, I might get a higher result.
If everything were to go perfectly, I might get a result of 61. Is this the highest possible skill roll in the game?
According to this article, while the highest possible Dexterity is 24, the highest possible Strength is 30, though that requires complex chain of circumstances. From a practical standpoint, the highest reasonable Strength is 27, from the Elixir of Cloud Giant Strength.

The problem with that approach is that there aren’t as many potential Strength Checks in the game as there are Sleight of Hand / Dexterity Checks. I could have a character keep using Athletics and shove enemies around.
The problem is that the game does not display the results of an Athletics check in the same noticeable way it does Sleight of Hand checks like lockpicking and disarming traps. There are some visible Strength checks, but not enough to go “hunting” for high die rolls.
If I’m going to pursue this idea of rolling ever-higher Skill Checks, Astarion is my best bet.
We’ll see if I can beat a 57 before I finish playthrough 12.
