Step 1: Put your MP3 player or whatever music player you have on random.
Step 2: Post a line/stanza from the first 20 songs that play, no matter how embarrassing the song.
Step 3: Post and let everyone you know guess what song and artist the lines come from.
Step 4: Bold the songs when someone guesses correctly. (No cheating with search engines!)
This one intrigued me; it made me listen to some lyrics that I hadn’t thought about in a while. Some of these will be trivially easy, but a couple are moderately obscure. I did "cheat": a large number of songs on my iPod are instrumental pieces. Maybe I should have omitted the sacred pieces in Latin, since so many songs share those words… but what the heck!
1. Dulcinea from Man of La Mancha – solved by Gayle Charette
Once you found a girl and called her Dulcinea
2. "Oliphaunt" written by J.R.R. Tolkien, performed by The Tolkien Ensemble on their album Leaving Rivendell – no one solved
Grey as a mouse
Big as a house
Nose like a snake,
I make the earth shake,
As I tramp through the grass;
The urge to merge can rob us of our senses,
The need to breed can make a man a drone.
We must on alert with our defenses,
For every skirt will test testosterone.
4. From Spamalot – solved by Gayle Charette
Come with me, come with me, come with me sweet Galahad.
You’ll be a man, join Arthur’s band, come with me and I will make you glad.
My name is Chaffey, I’m from Marriott, U.S.A.
I’m a high school graduate and I’m looking for a way
Credo in unum Deum
A boy went back to Napoli
Because he missed the scenery
The native dances and the charming songs
But wait a minute; something’s wrong!
8. "Paperback Writer" by the Beatles – solved by Devyn Barat
Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
Love is understanding.
Don’t you know that this is true?
Love is understanding.
It’s in everything we do.
Love is but the song we sing,
And fear’s the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry.
We’ve been the pride of Romania since 1201.
Passed on for generations, father to son.
Descended from gypsies, as proud as we can be.
Don’t risk my curse, it could be worse,
Embrace your family tree.
13. "Red is the Rose" – solved by Devyn Barat
Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Green is the lily of the valley
Clear is the water that flows in from the Boyne
My love is fairer than any.
The moment I saw her smile
I knew she was just my style
My only regret is we’ve never met
For I dream of her all the while
15. "Silver Shining Wheel" – solved by Devyn Barat
Holy Maiden Huntess
Maiden, come to us
I walk along darkened corridors
17. "From me to you" by the Beatles – solved by Gayle Charette
If there’s anything that you want
If there’s anything I could do
Just call on me and I’ll send it along
With love from me to you
The jim-jam-jump is a jumpin’ jive
Makes you get your kicks on the mellow side
Puer Natus In Bethlehem
You’ve been around all night
And that’s a little long
You think you’ve got the right
But I think you’ve got it wrong
Why can’t you say goodnight
So you can take me home, Mickey
