Forest of Fear

The Forest of Fear (FoF) is a haunted-house event held in the same location as the NY Ren Faire. Well, almost the same location: they actually use buildings in the parking-lot area.

It can be quite cold, especially since I used to work full-time outdoors. This year, though, I’ll be working in a tent, and I’ve already purchased a catalytic heater.

The FoF is loud where the Ren Faire is quiet. The Ren Faire plays medieval music, the FoF plays rock music. The “rides” at the Ren Faire are pony rides, or barrels on a swing; the rides at the FoF are amusement-park rides that can get noisy. The Ren Faire has laughter; the FoF has screams — and occasionally gunshots. It’s everything a Halloween attraction should be.

I’ll be putting in quite few night-time hours; the FoF opens at sunset and closes at midnight on Friday, 1 AM on Saturday (Sunday really…), and 11PM on Sunday nights.

I’m a little apprehensive about working there this season: the cold, the late hours, the noise. Then again, I’ve been apprehensive every one of the past four seasons I’ve done it. I’m sure it will be fine, and I’ll do enough readings to make the effort worthwhile.

Let’s see what happens.
