To Faire or not to Faire

Over the past few days I’ve felt the steady yearn to visit the NY Ren Faire before the end of the season. This means going this weekend (Sep 15 or 16), since I’ll probably be too busy the following weekend.

So why not just go?

As some of my friends know, and those who read my private LJ blog, I’m going through some health issues. I’m not sure I could handle it. I’ve exceeded my limits before. The last time that happened during a long trip, there was someone who could help me get home. That wouldn’t be the case at the Faire.

Then comes the inevitable question: To garb or not to garb?

Frankly, there’s one big reason to garb: it makes it easier to hide a small bottle of water so I can take my medications without walking half-way across the Faire to find a water fountain.

Why do I want to go?

There are some practical reasons. I want to order this year’s pentacle from Silvertree Designs; they’ve made me one new pentacle a year for the last 11 years, and I want to keep up the tradition. I want to buy the latest CDs from people I know: Rick Nestler (“The Singing Gravedigger”), Chris Leidenfrost-Wilson (“Henry Martin”), The Crimson Pirates. I may even get a chance to chat with Sally Eaton about Isaac Bonewits’ biography.

Of course, there’s the entertainment. I could really use another laugh right now.

Are those reasons enough to take the risk? I could do most of them by web, e-mails, or phone calls.

Except laugh, of course. There’s no app for that.

I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’ll watch my health, watch the weather, try on my garb pieces, and see how I feel as I get closer to the weekend before making any decisions.
